The author pays homage to Mickey Spillane pulp fiction detective noir, even writing in a first-person to give us that been there smelled that atmosphere. We follow Mojo through the seedy cheapy streets of New York as the connected black guy teams up with his Italian goombahs to rip off the Deli Man, a Banana Mob (really, I swear) associate suspected of skimming off the take. Theres a whole lot of tongue-in-cheek here in what comes off as a delightful blaxploitation thrill ride that Quentin Tarantino would salivate over. The stereotypes are bulldozed into the storylines as Mojos in (pun somewhat intended) is Deli Mans daughter Elizabeth, who has a fatal taste for dark meat. The N-word is used as liberally as in a gangsta CD as the Italians dont take kindly to miscegenation but, hey, this is the 18th century getting hammered into the 21st. Yet theyre about to slip on a banana peel (man, caint help it!) as they slip and slide back into Sixties street jive. Mojo becomes the Millenials John Shaft as he shoots, boots and scoots his way through all them Guidos straight into the final reel. If you havent sat down and wallowed in a good pulp fiction novel lately. You need to pick this up. Killer With A Heart by J.L. Hill is a taste of Little Italy you wont forget. The writing is dense and intense, simultaneously richly coloured and dark. Its a world with which I have no connexion, yet Mr. Hill brings it alive, and lends to it the universality of the human condition. The protagonist - Mojo - is highly intelligent and resourceful, and is at once wasted as a gangster and yet suited to it. Like the writing, he is rough and raw; shining and elevated. Boys and girls and gangs and mob. What fun! A planned heist unintentionally touches the mob, and the mob hits back against Mojos young gang. Thats a mistake. No spoilers, though. Enough to say its a hell of a ride.
